John XXIII was nicknamed "The Good Pope" because of his humble, loving, and open character and his gracious sense of humor. In possessing those attributes, he is viewed by many to be similar to Pope Francis today. Like Pope Francis, Pope John was wont to stroll about Rome by night and make pastoral visits to sick children and prison inmates. John's secretary, the Italian prelate Loris Capovilla, heard the news from Pope Francis himself and remarked how appropriate it was for the step to be taken by "the successor most similar" to John.

Shortly before Pope John's death, the International Balzan Foundation, which is headquartered in Milan and Zurich, awarded Pope John its Peace Prize. Then, in December 1963, President Lyndon Johnson posthumously awarded him the United States' Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award. The canonization of Pope John XXIII was announced by Pope Francis shortly after the 50th anniversary of John's death. The date of canonization was April 27, 2014, Divine Mercy Sunday, the first Sunday after Easter.

At 109 pages on the Kindle, Wyatt North's Pope John XXIII: The Good Pope is a fast easy to understand introduction into Catholicism as well as being a brief biographical sketch of Pope John XIII who served as pope for four years.and seven months, during the period of time after the end of WWII and the early times of the Cold War. He led the church to being more open, accepting of the idea that there is more than one way to the divine. He fostered the ideas of a gracious and loving God, of the laity taking a more active role in the church, of women developing their minds through education in more than the traditional approved subjects, of understanding what led to the Holocaust, of appreciating diversity, and of the clergy visiting their flock. The narrative is well-written and is easy to follow, though if you are not familiar with the Catholic faith, you should have a dictionary nearby or use an e-reader like the Kindle that has the Oxford Dictionary on it.

Pope John XXIII The Good Pope (Audible Audio Edition) Wyatt North David Glass LLC Wyatt North Publishing Books Reviews

I normally don't buy biographies and certainly not books on religious leaders. However, I couldn't resist this book about Pope John XXIII. I passed it by a few times and finally gave into my curiosity and clicked the Buy button.

Pope John XXIII was my favorite pope as a child. I have fond memories of the time he was at the head of the Catholic church. I also remember when he died. The church bells in my neighborhood tolled literally for hours.

It was fascinating to read about his early childhood growing up in a very large impoverished family. I also had no idea he had to serve in the military. I really enjoyed the writing style and the way the book flowed. I very much enjoyed this read and recommend it to anyone who loves biographies, wants to understand more about this great Pope or enjoys an interesting historical based book. Kudos to Wyatt North for writing a wonderful book.
In this short, (less than one hundred pages), biography of Pope John XXIII, we see his humble beginnings and subsequent rise to popularity due to his good nature and his reaching out to those not of his faith. Because of this radical view, he started the Second Vatican Council and thus changed the Church and brought it into the twentieth century. It's a very good read, thus a five star rating!
I remember John XXIII very fondly. I was just a teenager when he was elected, and he had a huge influence on me, even though I'm not Catholic. He was the guy who basically blew the doors off the church and made it accessible to the rest of the world. Because of him, years later I could send my daughter to a Catholic high school for the educational advantages and moral environment and feel good about it, even though the religion itself was different from ours. I'd hoped that this book would give me some insight into the man; however, it turned out to be an ultra-basic biography, written at about a middle-school level, with no insight whatsoever. I was SO disappointed in it! I don't recommend it to anyone who is looking for anything more than absolute basic facts.
I am not a Catholic. Well that's not really true. I was raised a Lutheran, a follower of Martin Luther a Catholic Priest, he of the 99 Theses. So I'm Catholic once removed. I enjoy good books and I LOVE free ones, so when this one was offered as a free book in my daily Bookbub email I read the "look inside" on and decided to choose it. I'm very glad that I did. The man who became Pope lead a very interesting life that on the surface seems to have been a lot of "being in the right place at the right time", but a person can only believe in coincidence just so much. I do not profess to being a religious person but you'd have to be really blind to not see divine intervention at work. In reading this I was constantly thinking about Pope Francis and what I've heard about him and how like Pope John XXIII he seems, so it was interesting to me when the book goes on to say that Pope Francis identifies with him a lot. Pope John is fascinating and is now on my top 20 people I'd like to meet in my afterlife.
Pope John XXIII The Good Pope is a short but accurate portrayal of one of our Greatest Popes. John XXIII was born into a family of poverty which makes it amazing that he became Pope. It also explains his interests in issues of socail justice.
Elected in 1968, following the death of Pope Pius XII, Cardinal Roncalli took the name of John XXII. That name in and of itself created issues. The last John in the Papacy was John XXII, an anti-Pope. The question was what # of John was he. Since no legitimate heir to the Papacy had been John XXIII, he took that name.

interesting facts
- served in the military twice -- once as a seminaritan and once as a priest
- elected as a as an interim - due to his age of 77, it was believed that he would have a short
papacy and would just keep the status quo
- Pope for 4 years and 7 months
- has the inspiration for Vatican II - the open the windows of the Vatican and allow fresh air in
- 1st Council of the Church not called for a specific problem within the Church - usually a heresy
- Pope John XXIII made it clear that this was to be a postive council
- Council ran from 1962-1965
- Pope John XXIII presided over the 1st session
- activist on the world stage - he was not shy about exerting his moral authority
- wrote 8 Enclylicals (Papal Letters) during his Papacy
- Support the use of the Vernacular (lang. of the people) in the Mass
- while he supported the use of the Vernacular he kept Latin as the official lang of the Church and
believed it still had a place within it
- began the healing process between the Jewish Faith and the Catholic Church
- believe to have saved more Jewish lives and improve relationship with the Jewish church than any
other Catholic in history
- prayed the Rosary several times daily

While many have been critical of Vatican II, I believe it was a brainchild of a brillant man that set the Roman Church on a much needed path

Wyatt North also points out that there is a similarity between Pope John XXII and our current Holy Father, Pope Francis. I find that there is such a commonality between them. People are responding to Pope Francis as they did to Pope John XXIII.

Wonderful book for anyone who wishes to brush up on their knowledge of John XXIII or wishes to learn about him prior to his Canonization as a Saint.
